He “Lx86″ ability, to be included in IBM’s PowerVM virtualization software, allows x86-based Linux applications to run on IBM’s System p and Power-based Unix systems without modification, media account Thursday. “The ability will make simpler the consolidation of Unix and Linux server sprawls,” said Scott Handy, vice president of advertising and strategy for IBM Power Systems. “Running Linux applications in the Unix environment can reduce the cost of server consolidation and energy use and increase benefit utilization.”

The systems will mechanically detect and run Linux-based binaries designed for x86 environments. “Lx86 is a way to say ‘Whatever you have, it can run,” said Scott Handy. Lx86 will be a useful tool for people looking to wander from Linux systems to other IBM systems, IBM said. The company offers both Unix and Linux in service systems on its servers.

The capability will be included in all editions of IBM’s PowerVM platform, which it also renamed Tuesday from the higher Power Virtualization platform. The software now includes an Express edition targeted at small- and medium-size business. It allows customers to create up to three partitions on a server and control the use of computer cycles to get optimal presentation.

Ericsson and Lenovo, the world’s third main PC maker, have aligned to give mobile broadband modules based on HSPA – the world’s most widely commercially deployed technology for mobile broadband. Select Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks will include mobile broadband modules beginning in 2008. Lenovo is Ericsson’s first make known mobile broadband module customer.

HSPA provides a DSL-like practice wirelessly and is at present capable of peak download rates of up to 14.4 Mbps and peak upload rates of up to 2.0 Mbps. There are currently more than 160 commercially deployed HSPA networks internationally, serving more than one billion subscribers.

“Lenovo is dedicated to PC innovation and providing our customers the latest functionality and tools to enhance their computing experience,” said, Frances K. O’Sullivan, Senior Vice President, Product Group, Lenovo. “Our engineering team is functioning with Ericsson’s engineers to deliver ThinkPads with the fastest and most reliable connectivity available. We firmly believe that this effort will dramatically change the user mobile experience, allowing ThinkPad customers to more easily search, download, share, and store information and content when they want.” “With mobile networks being upgraded globally to handle greater demand for Internet services and data connectivity, consumers are increasingly utilizing mobile phones and notebooks to access the successful services that they have typically experienced only through a wired or WiFi connection,” said Kurt Jofs, Executive Vice President and head of Business Unit Networks, Ericsson. “Today, Ericsson is doing for broadband what the company did for telephony 20 years ago – making it mobile and nearby to everyone, everywhere. We respect Lenovo’s ground-breaking approach to business and their vision in this maket and we look forward to future opportunities to work by way of them to create even more advanced mobile computing solutions that translate into direct customer value.”

Ericsson’s mobile broadband modules provide the end user with a simple and cost effective solution for broadband access while on-the-go. Faultlessly integrated with and optimized to work within the notebook, the built-in broadband module provides superior downloading and uploading performance and takes less power from the battery. Leveraging Ericsson’s in-house HSPA chipset technology and strong patent cross-licensing position, the company’s economies of scale and longstanding operator relationships, Ericsson can offer a very competitive mobile broadband module solution that will help further drive a mass market for mobile broadband.

Market projections point to that in 2011, approximately 200 million notebooks will ship annually and Ericsson anticipates that 50 percent of that notebook will feature a built-in HSPA mobile broadband module. Users will more and more have the option to take their broadband connections with them, delivering on the promise of full service broadband, which is anytime, anywhere access from the screen or device of choice.

Ericsson is the world’s leading provider of technology and services to telecom operators. The market leader in 2G and 3G mobile technologies, Ericsson supplies communications services and manages networks that serve more than 185 million subscribers. The company’s selection comprises mobile in addition to fixed network infrastructure, and broadband and CD solutions for operators, enterprises and developers. The Sony Ericsson joint venture provides customers with feature-rich private mobile devices.

Ericsson is move on its vision of ‘communication for all’ through innovation, technology, and sustainable business solutions. Working in 175 countries, more than 70,000 employees make revenue of USD 27.9 billion (SEK 189 billion) in 2007. Founded in 1876 and headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, Ericsson is listed on the Stockholm, London and NASDAQ stock exchanges.

About Ericsson’s HSPA solution

HSPA stands for High Speed Packet Access. An inherent advantage of HSPA is that the technology is a natural extension of existing WCDMA/GSM networks, or about 85 percent of the world’s existing wireless networks, and therefore has the potential to be readily available to a large number of wireless users, creating a mass market for mobile broadband. By 2010, 71 percent of mobile broadband connections are projected to be HSPA-based. Ericsson’s HSPA mobile broadband solution is part of Ericsson’s Full Service Broadband offering. The advanced technology lets operators more than double their system capacity and cuts reply era for interactive services. On average, users will be clever to download 20 times faster than with a GSM/GPRS connection. Future development steps will augment the HSPA download speed to 42Mbps and the upload speed to 12Mbps. Ericsson offers HSPA hold up on many frequency bands ranging from 850MHz to 2.6GHz.

About Ericsson Mobile Broadband Modules

Ericsson’s Mobile Broadband unit designed and manufactured by Ericsson, supports HSPA, EDGE, GPRS and GSM. For HSPA it will initially offer peak rates of 7.2Mbps in the downlink and 2Mbps in the uplink

Microsoft Company. Monday gave users of its Office 2003 application suite a 30-day warning that it will begin approaching the software’s Service Pack 3 via Microsoft Update next month. The notice go after a dustup earlier this month over new security settings in Office 2003 SP3 that blocked right of entry to a swath of older file formats. After users protest on the company’s hold up forums, and a software rival asked why its files were being barred, Microsoft apologized and posted work-around to make it easier for users to unclog the formats.

Microsoft proclaims that it would add Office 2003 SP3 to its Microsoft Update listings beginning Feb. 27. Microsoft Update, a friend service to Windows Update, downloads patches and other fixes for the operating scheme as well because a number of the company’s applications, particularly Office. “Those customers who have not by now installed SP3 and that have chosen to be known updates automatically will start to receive the service pack as early as February 27,” a Microsoft lecturer said today in an e-mail. “[But] the sharing through [Microsoft Update] is a gradual process and so not every client will see the service pack on February 27.”

Microsoft Update and Windows Update take their instructions from the client PC’s Automatic Updates settings; those let users state whether updates will be mechanically downloaded and installed, downloaded but not installed, or not downloaded. Users who do not wish to automatically improve their copies of Office 2003 must set Automatic Updates to the second or third option above.

Microsoft’s Office and Update teams said that the warning is in keeping with a policy that debuted with Office 2007 SP1, when the company promised that it would give users a 30-day warning before turning on an routine service-pack update. In December, Reed Shaffer, worldwide product manager for Office, promise that Microsoft would not use Microsoft Update to deliver Office 2007’s SP1 for at least three months, perhaps longer.

“This policy seems to have worked really well with SP3 because it gave the market plenty of time to evaluate the service pack, gave us time to address concerns, and now we can push it to the hundreds of millions of users who depend on us to stay them safe,” said the two teams in a joint posting to a company blog.

Office 2003 SP3 was reveal by Microsoft last September and has been obtainable for downloading from the company’s Web site since then.
