Microsoft Company. Monday gave users of its Office 2003 application suite a 30-day warning that it will begin approaching the software’s Service Pack 3 via Microsoft Update next month. The notice go after a dustup earlier this month over new security settings in Office 2003 SP3 that blocked right of entry to a swath of older file formats. After users protest on the company’s hold up forums, and a software rival asked why its files were being barred, Microsoft apologized and posted work-around to make it easier for users to unclog the formats.

Microsoft proclaims that it would add Office 2003 SP3 to its Microsoft Update listings beginning Feb. 27. Microsoft Update, a friend service to Windows Update, downloads patches and other fixes for the operating scheme as well because a number of the company’s applications, particularly Office. “Those customers who have not by now installed SP3 and that have chosen to be known updates automatically will start to receive the service pack as early as February 27,” a Microsoft lecturer said today in an e-mail. “[But] the sharing through [Microsoft Update] is a gradual process and so not every client will see the service pack on February 27.”

Microsoft Update and Windows Update take their instructions from the client PC’s Automatic Updates settings; those let users state whether updates will be mechanically downloaded and installed, downloaded but not installed, or not downloaded. Users who do not wish to automatically improve their copies of Office 2003 must set Automatic Updates to the second or third option above.

Microsoft’s Office and Update teams said that the warning is in keeping with a policy that debuted with Office 2007 SP1, when the company promised that it would give users a 30-day warning before turning on an routine service-pack update. In December, Reed Shaffer, worldwide product manager for Office, promise that Microsoft would not use Microsoft Update to deliver Office 2007’s SP1 for at least three months, perhaps longer.

“This policy seems to have worked really well with SP3 because it gave the market plenty of time to evaluate the service pack, gave us time to address concerns, and now we can push it to the hundreds of millions of users who depend on us to stay them safe,” said the two teams in a joint posting to a company blog.

Office 2003 SP3 was reveal by Microsoft last September and has been obtainable for downloading from the company’s Web site since then.

Microsoft has reversed field and opened public admission to the latest beta build of Vista Service Pack 1. Users can now download Vista SP1 RC Refresh from Microsoft’s Web site. Users can install the beta via Windows Update, but Microsoft is providing a list of procedures users should follow to avoid problems.

Microsoft at first released the Refresh beta on Jan. 9 to approximately 15,000 beta testers that built-in corporate customers, consumer fans, software and hardware vendors, and others, according to a company spokesman. The spokesman said on Jan. 10 Microsoft determined to make the beta open to everyone with a notice via its TechNet Web site. Microsoft said its intention was to get the widest and sincere feedback it can before releasing the software.

The spokesman said Vista SP1 is still slated for release before the end of March.

More Popular in Businesses?

The beta news comes on the heels of the third phase of a year-long study conducted by Walker Information for IT services and artificial goods supplier CDW, which shows Vista gaining status in the business market. The study shows that 48% of respondents are using or evaluating Windows Vista — up from 29% in the previous poll from February 2007 and from 12% in the first poll taken in October 2006.

Microsoft first made Windows Vista SP1 RC Preview accessible on Nov. 14 to 15,000 testers as part of its private beta program. In December, the company opened the beta to the public.

Microsoft hopes to align SP1’s ease of use with Windows Server 2008, which Microsoft hopes to ship on or before its Feb. 27, 2008 launch event in Los Angeles.

Vista SP1 will comprise a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements but no new features, Microsoft said. Microsoft also is updating its set of Vista relocation tools, including the Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0, Windows Vista Hardware Assessment 2.1 solution accelerator (formerly called Business Desktop Deployment), and Microsoft User State Migration Tools 3.0.

Microsoft officials said the Vista SP1 RC includes changes that streamline setup and installation. It also includes all previously released updates since RTM, performance and reliability development such as file copy, network browsing and better response time to resume from sleep, and change to administration features, including changes to BitLocker that allow encryption for multiple volumes. Over the years, SP1 versions of any Microsoft products have become a traditional milestone that some corporate users wait for before they even believe rolling out the software.

Uptake of Vista has been slow by corporate users, many of whom have standardized on XP and are reluctant to undertake another migration.

Using multiple Web browsers can help you get your work accomplished more effectively and with the maximum concern for security online. You’ll determine as you experiment with using different Web browsers that some are more effective for specific tasks. You might find it easy to do your online banking with one browser that offers sharp security features, while you read your favorite blogs with another browser that offers more options to customize the look of the text.

* Visit the download page for the browser you’d like to try .Click on the ‘Download Now’ button or link.

* Click the ‘Save File’ button in the dialog box.

* Click ‘Next’ again to continue the automatic installation process. When the installation is complete, click the ‘Finish’ button.

Set a Default Browser

1. Click on the ‘Set Program Access and Defaults’ to find your newly installed Web browsers.

2. Choose the ‘Custom’ radio button to specify your default browser.

3. Click on the arrow button and find your Web browser in the list.

4. Select the radio button that corresponds to the Web browser that you want as your default browser.

Launch & Decide Your Web Browser & Function
